Have you ever wondered how some people lose the weight and keep it off? Ever gone on a crash diet only to see all the weight you lost (and then some) come back? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you’re not alone. Many of us have attempted to shed the extra weight, but then we give into old habits and gain all the pounds we worked so hard to lose. We start to wonder if it’s even possible to break the pattern and crack the code.
Well I wish I could tell you that there’s a magic formula, but there isn’t. There’s no easy answer and for most of us losing, and maintaining the weight is hard work. Trust me, I know. I’ve struggled with my weight most of my life. So what changed this time around? I changed my approach.
I’ve compiled a list of steps you need to take before you jump in to your weight loss journey. These five steps will increase your chances of successfully losing the weight and ultimately keeping it off! Let’s dive right into it.
- DEFINE YOUR “WHY”
Before you do anything, be very clear as to why you’re choosing to lose the weight. Write it down! This is a non-negotiable. So before you start throwing things out of your fridge or getting on the treadmill, download my Free Weight Loss Plan, pull up a chair, and spend the time to fill it out. I promise that taking the time to define your purpose and lay out your plan will make the biggest difference.
Key Point: You must have a powerful reason as to why you’re doing this. Your “why” will be the anchor reason to keep going when the going gets tough.
- HAVE A MAIN GOAL IN MIND
Once you know why you’re doing this, then it’s time to write down your overall goal. By setting a clear goal, you will be giving yourself direction. Visualize an end goal and set your target.
Key Point: Your main goal will provide needed direction when you veer off course and will help you measure your progress.
- ESTABLISH AN OVERALL PLAN
Now that you’ve visualized and defined your main goal, it’s time to dive into HOW you plan to accomplish your goal. It’s essential that you break up your main goal into separate milestones. Breaking up your main goal into smaller sections, will make the process easier to follow. The easiest way I can recommend you do this is by coming up with a projected “Due Date” when you expect to reach your goal. Then divide that length of time by four to come up with a total of 4 milestones.
Let me give you an example. Say your goal is to lose “x” pounds in a year, go ahead and break the plan into 3-month intervals, for a total of 4 quarters. Check-in every three months and compare your milestone target with your actual results. If your result is better than/or on target, keep at it and come back in three months. If on the other hand you missed your milestone, then you know you should revisit your plan. Don’t beat yourself up, make the necessary adjustments, and power on through for the next three months.
If this sounds complicated, don’t worry I’ve got you covered. By downloading the Free Weight Loss Plan that I’m giving you, you will be able to just print and fill out the necessary spaces to come up with your plan. It’s that simple.
Key Point: Your plan is the roadmap to reaching your goal.
- DEVELOP A PLAN TO REACH YOUR FIRST MILESTONE
Now that you have developed your overall weight loss plan, forget your main goal and focus all your energy into planning how you’re going to achieve your first milestone. This is where you need to think about what you need to change in your life. Ask yourself, how am I going to improve my nutrition? How am I going to become more physically active? This is where you try things and find what works, and what doesn’t work, for YOU! I’ve simplified this for you by providing you with a weekly log for each Milestone where you can keep track of your progress.
Key Point: Setting a clear plan to achieve your first milestone will help to keep you accountable as you work on reaching your overall goals.
- FIND YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM
Look around and find at least two people in your life that will be there to support you through this entire process. Ask them to help keep you accountable. It’s so important that you find people that understand and believe in you!
Weight loss isn’t linear and women in particular see greater fluctuations due to hormones. Your body will change, but it will also adapt. You’ll have to be ready to tweak your plan as you work through those tough moments. The extra weight didn’t come overnight, so we can’t expect it to come off quickly either. The key to success is not perfection, it’s consistent behavior that gets you there. REMEMBER THAT PATIENCE & CONSISTENCY ARE THE KEY TO SUCCESS!
If you happen to fall off the wagon, don’t throw in the towel. Go back to and re-read the first section of your Free Weight Loss Plan and remind yourself of why you started in the first place. Get back into your plan and keep moving forward.
That’s it ladies. I hope you find these 5 steps useful as you embark on an amazing challenge to change your life! Until next time, I’m wishing you a strong and healthier life!
