Therefore, if shedding 5-10 pounds from your frame is going to give you that extra kick in your step, then I’ve come up with 5 styling techniques that you can implement instantly to make you look slimmer. Here we go!
TIP #1: COLORS
Use darker colors to disguise your problem areas and pair up with bright or contrasting colored tops to call attention to another part of your body. Here are some examples.
Bottom half: If you want to camouflage your bottom half, use dark pants or skirts and use a light or bold colored top to help draw the eyes away from your bottom half. Also, you can use prints to create a focal point.
Upper half: On the flip side, if you’re wanting to camouflage your upper half, stick to solid dark colors and opt for less volume with your accessories. You might also want showcase your bottom half by showing a little leg or if you don’t want to show your leg, maybe go for a skinny jean and a bold shoe to draw the eyes down and away from that area you’re wanting to camouflage.
TIP #2: ACCESSORIES
Belts – Use belts to help give structure to your body. I actually think that belts are the forgotten accessory because at the store I notice there are not a lot of women that wear them and they are for the most part an afterthought.
- Petite women would benefit from using a thin belt that is the same color of your outfit.
- Tall women would benefit from using wider belts.
- Curvy or plus sized ladies would benefit from using a stretchy belt or one that contrasts with your outfit to create an hourglass shape.
Jewelry – Make your neckline your focal point by adding a bold necklace if you’re wanting to draw attention away from another part of your body. Or use more dainty pieces of jewelry to soften your look in specific areas. Play around with different pieces to create the look that best suits your needs!
TIP #3: SHOES
Length makes you look slimmer! Wear the right shoes to create an optical illusion of additional length. Here are some key things to consider when choosing the right pair for a slimmer look.
- Go for Heels. Heels automatically give you length.
- Pointed Shoes make your feet look longer. Round Shoes actually make you look shorter.
- Go for a nude color (Similar to your skin color). Blending the shoe to your leg creates an illusion of a longer leg.
- Slim heels. The chunkier the heel, the more volume it gives to your feet and your leg. Consider a slim heel to slenderize the leg.
TIP #4: HIGH WAISTED BOTTOMS
High waisted jeans, leggings, skirts, etc. help in a number of ways. First, if you’re wanting to disguise a tummy a high waisted legging, for example, can help cover that area. Also, a high waisted bottom creates an illusion that you have longer legs, which helps elongate your torso and gives you additional length. Add a belt to cinch up your waist and create a slimming effect.
TIP #5: LAYERS
Play with layers to get the right look your going for. For example, if you’re going to wear a loose top, consider wearing a jacket with structure to give you a more slimming look. Likewise, if you’re going to wear a loose button down shirt, then I suggest you use a fitting layer and a belt to create the structure that will help you look slimmer. The key thing to remember here is that wearing clothes that are either too big or too small will make you look like you have extra lbs.
